OHM electric bikes are helping you to cycle farther than you ever thought possible. Not to mention they are a super cool and fun ride! In this guide you will learn everything you ever wanted to know about your bike batteries from a brief history to how they work, to care and maintenance, as well as, optimization and performance. So, let’s get current! ⚡

About Lithium-Ion batteries

Pioneering work of the lithium battery began in the early 1900s.  Because of the inherent instability of lithium metal, particularly during charging, research switched to a non-metallic solution using lithium ions. Sony filed for an international patent and launched the first Li -ion battery in 1991. Lithium is the lightest of all metals and has the greatest electrochemical potential, providing the largest specific energy per mass. With cost reductions, increased specific energy and the absence of toxic material paved the way for, Li-ion to become the most universally accepted battery used in all kinds of portable applications. It is used in everything from satellites to computers, mobile phones to watches, as well as electric cars and electric bikes.

Advantages of Lithium-Ion battery technology

Compared to older generations of battery technology, the Li-ion rechargeable battery provides the most cutting-edge technology on the market for electric bikes.

The advantages are:

  • Quick to recharge
  • Maximum energy density
  • Most compact and lightweight
  • Easy to store
  • Added safety when charging at lower voltages
  • Increased safety with current Li-ion batteries vs. older types
  • Easy removal and installation- can be charged in the home
  • Batteries can be conveniently charged on the bike itself

OHM’s Electric Bike Battery and Performance

Understand an Electric Bike Performance and its relation to your battery

Your OHM Electric Bike battery is built to be simple and straightforward. This is only feasible thanks to a combination of skilled engineering and innovative technologies. Batteries are a complicated technology, and a lot of factors can influence battery performance. Your OHM battery will slowly lose maximum available range over years of use providing reliable battery capacity for the average rider.

Battery Capacity

Our batteries are rated for 1000 charge cycles and will last most five or more years for regular riders, at which point it will retain 60% of the original capacity after 1000 charge cycles. New batteries are available for replacement.

High Level Water-Resistant Performance

OHM batteries and chargers are IPX5 water-resistant, so you don’t need to bring in your batteries indoors to recharge. They can be charged outside on your bike. This is of great benefit for riders who want to boost their range while shopping or meeting friends for a meal.

Maximizing Battery Performance

We always want to make sure we have optimum performance with our electric bikes.

Here are some simple ways to get the most range out of your OHM’s battery, follow these tips.

  1.   Make sure the battery is fully charged before you start your ride. Our 504Wh battery has a range of 45-120 km/28-75 miles.
  2.   Before you begin your ride, make sure your tires are properly inflated. Rolling resistance is reduced by using the proper tire pressure. This gives you a smooth, comfortable ride that’s also efficient. The max PSI is displayed on the side of the tires.
  3.   Shift in a strategic manner. Low gearing is best for low speeds and starting from a stop. This allows you to get up to speed quickly while also consuming less battery power. You should use a higher gear as the speed increases, and it's important to lessen pedal pressure while shifting gears for smooth support and maximum range.
  4.   Ride without support. OHM Electric bikes are very smooth and  can be used with no assist. Many people ride without support on the flats, only adding pedal-assist for the hill climbs. Remember, you can get two for one-increased physical health and longer battery life!

Follow these tips-ride farther and enjoy maximum range with your OHM Electric Bike.

Maximizing Battery Life

"Battery life" is the amount of time your bicycle runs before requiring a charge. "Battery lifespan" is a measure of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

Avoid extreme temperatures.

Your battery is designed to perform well in a wide range of ambient temperatures, with (16-22 C)/ (62- 72 F) as the ideal comfort zone. However, it's best to avoid exposing your bike battery to prolonged ambient temperatures higher than (35 C) 95 F, which can permanently reduce the longevity of the battery. As a result, your battery will not power your e-bike for as long on a given charge. Keeping your electric bike away from temperatures beyond 35 C/ 95 F is important. Lithium-ion performs well at elevated temperatures but prolonged exposure to heat reduces longevity.

Charging or storing the battery in a hot environment over 45 C may also lead to decreased longevity. If you operate your electric bike in an extremely cold environment, the battery's power will return to standard power capacity once the temperature returns to its usual operating range.

If your battery is in prolonged storage we recommend storing it at 60% charge and keeping it at an ambient temperature. Following these two main rules will provide a long health for your battery.

If you store your electric bike with a fully empty battery, it may go into a deep depletion state, making it unusable. When charging the battery, avoid keeping the battery plugged into the charger for longer than 24 hours. When the charge is complete, unplug the charger from the battery.

Ensure your battery is kept in a cool, dry location with a temperature of less than 32C (90F). Charge your battery to 60% every six months if you expect to store it for longer than six months if you expect to store it longer than that.

Bear in mind that when you adopt these governing principles you will no doubt increase the health and life of your electric bike’s battery. If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are more than happy to help!
